When it comes to planning your engagement photos the top of your list is probably finding the right photographer, picking the right clothes, making sure the timeline aligns with when you’d like to send your save the dates but there’s one crucial detail that can truly help make your engagement photos… location.

Aside from how a setting looks, your location can be a huge determine factor on the overall feel of your engagement photos. I always ask my couples before their engagement session what their vibe is? What kind of setting best represents them? How are they hoping these photos will feel? How do they want the final product to represent them? For Brittney and Tony, they wanted a more urban setting so we went downtown for their engagement photos.

As a photographer I’m always looking for good locations for clients, giving you options that will best fit your needs and style, and making sure we’re on the same page for capturing this exciting new chapter of your life. Sometimes that means traveling to a location that has sentimental value for you, doing a cozy in home session when the weather is cooler, or finding the spots around a local area that will bring your vision to life.

I always like to ask the following questions about a location when scouting and prepping for a session:

1) Does it offer variety in settings?

2) Can we shoot in different lighting based on the area surrounding us?

3) Is it easy to access for everyone involved in the session?

4) Is it public or private land?

5) Does the timing of the session line up with the vision for the session at this location?

I always give the option to my clients to do their session indoors at my studio or use it as a potential rain location if we’re shooting locally. We were able to work outside for this session for about 20 minutes before we got rained out and had to move indoors to my studio to wrap up the session. Located on the second floor of the Pajama Factory in Williamsport, Pa I’ve worked to create the perfect space to seamlessly bring clients into for their sessions.

My Studio in the Pajama Factory was the perfect finale to their more urban feeling engagement session and gave some nice variation as well as a date night feel to the outdoor setting we had started at. We were able to move back outside at the end of the session to capture some photos around the exterior the building and book end their shoot with an industrial/urban feeling.
